Stiff Neck And Ankles

Helga King in conversation with Professor Dr. Grönemeyer

Dear Prof. Dr. Grönemeyer, some time ago I found your book " your heart: a history of other organ " reviewed. Today I would like this, not very aware of your time taking in stock, ask four questions.

Helga King: You have in your book, in which the innocent reader from the title might at first suspect a dry medical facts book, some incorporated poems by renowned poet can. Do you love poetry and believe that this is a labor of love? If so, why?

Prof. Dr. Grönemeyer : Yes, I love literature, as well as music and some songs such as "Get out of my heart, and seek joy" bless me since my childhood. For me, "the heart" has been an important issue, especially since my own serious heart disease. For thousands of years even the thoughts of men revolve around these questions has to do the heart with feelings, fears, happiness and love. No culture in the heart not played a central role. The institution has its own story. Anyone who wants to understand them, must exceed the borders of science. Because we humans live not only by the beat of our heart, we feel it too. Everyone experiences the joy in his own way through, physical, pain and suffering. In countless works of art, in pictures, in verse and novels, this finding has been lifted. And proved by the latest scientific studies: The heart is more than one pump, the heart feels.

Helga King : You say that with advanced engineering life alone and would not let manage in this way the heart on the line. How to get this result of thinking?

Prof. Dr. Grönemeyer : Not every heart that hurts, be equal to the cardiac catheter can be tested and treated. Often the patients would be helped if only with the understanding demand. If the oppression of the heart in many cases, but from what weighs on the minds of Anxiety, negative stress and other psychological pressure, irritation, which can record any device. Everyone or almost everyone knows this, and recent studies have been proven many times. The doctors know the context, the knowledge has long been in the area of professional self-evident. But everyday in practice is always taken into account? Or we are - hand on heart - not too often seduces us to promise the supposedly secure results from the use of medical devices? If we do not prefer to use the technology, as that we engage in the lengthy interview, we go to the shaky ground of a very personal or even psycho-social investigation of the apparently no measurable results, no clear "data", no hard facts can be expected? And is not expected in a certain sense of the patient so? Is it not true that their trust in the medical care in the extent to which the technical complexity of treatment increases? And this is not true even more so when it comes to the central organ of our lives goes to our heart?
Every stitch, every grass, every anguish we feel because, raise the fear in us. Suddenly we panic. We are alarmed. We want the best help and think first of the technical achievements of medical research. What she Medicine has brought is beyond question, and the rescue of countless human lives would be unthinkable without them, without X, without slice technology or cardiac catheterization. And yet it must be remembered that not every disturbance of the rhythm, not all heart disease can be detected this way. Modern technical diagnosis alone gives no absolute safety and always must be involved in the holistic assessment of complaints by the doctor.

Not every patient who comes with palpitations and panic attacks to the hospital must show an ECG or catheter examination striking results. Still too often is a concern that the heart, although it is intact even respond as pain body can. These functional problems caused, for example by chronic negative stress, anxiety or depression as well as metabolic or hormonal dysregulation are still a widely underestimated threat to their technically based misdiagnosis of disease - may lead to worse consequences - not only of the heart .

Helga King : Is it possible that many causes of a heart attack in emotional awkwardness of, not loved the feeling of being in stressful situations and to find any kind are they?

Prof. Dr. Grönemeyer : Usually we take the term "stress" all this together, what burdens us in any positive way (eustress) or negative (distress). Psychologists emphasize that stress itself is not harmful, the person needs it, on the contrary, to live and develop continuously to. Only an excess of stress or a burden, especially by negative stress, the cause of management is outside the personal assets actually or supposedly, the impact is harmful at some point varies from person to person.

Helga King : Is the risk of a heart attack for people eat a healthy diet, do not smoke and move and try to make a cheerful mood, low?

Prof. Dr. Grönemeyer : Neuro-and psycho-cardiology studies have shown that a may lead to negative feelings of stress-induced heart rhythm disturbances. Similarly, studies indicate that positive emotions produce a more harmonious rhythm, balance and physical well-being. A recent study found that men in unhappy relationships twice the risk of suffering a heart attack, how happy bound. A healthy lifestyle - lots of exercise, healthy eating and positive attitude to life - is so in terms of prevention of heart diseases is very important. A guarantee not to fall ill, there can be, unfortunately, since there are always other factors such as genetic predispositions, sudden stress situations or unrecognized disease.

Dear Professor Dr. Grönemeyer, thank you for this enlightening interview.

your Helga King
