RĂ¼diger Schmidt at Cern has just informed about the current status of the LHC. The proton beam is turned off right now, as minor problems are problems with the cooling system. The cooling system ensures that the huge magnets that keep the beam on the circular path, not too hot. Only a difference of 0.2 degrees Celsius is tolerated, which has now been reached.
In about 10 minutes we will also try to start the second proton beam in the opposite direction. Further stated Schmidt, that the first jet circled the ring this morning until now has only three plays. Before you can attempt to circulate the beam continuously, even some settings must be made. Schmidt expects that this will be during the evening so far.
Schmidt also stressed that it is still months, if not even take years before one can use the particle accelerator fully.
